Job Overview Demographers are also called population specialists. Their job is to collect and analyze vital statistics that are related to population of humans. These population vital statistics include the birth rate, death rate, morbidity rate, percentage of people in a specific religion, employment rate, and many others. They are responsible in planning and conducting research methods such as surveys to study population trends and be able to determine the effects of population movements in the society. As demographers, they are very important in fulfilling the roles of a reasearcher specifically in specifics of the population and are therefore hired by the government or private companies doing population study such as censuses of different kinds, across the country.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you are planning to establish a good carreer as a demographer, take courses such as English, Mathematics and Social Studies as preparatory courses in high school.These subjects will provide a strong background to the candidate which will be useful in the postsecondary trainings to be taken after. The minimum requirement to become a demographer is a Bacehlor's degree. The courses that may be taken include B.S. Statistics, B.S. Social Science, B.S. Public Health and B.s. Social Research. These courses are directly related to the job of a demographer and will increase the chance of being hired by the government agencies as one.
Skills and Abilities
The skills that are very important to possess to become an excellent demographer are the statistical or mathematical skills. Organization skills, and analytical skills are also crucial in data organization and interpretation. Skills in written communication and oral communication may be useful in recording and reporting findings and results of the studies conducted.
Duties
Demographers aim to establish ways in which data numbers or numerical data from the population may be organized and be a useful information.
Their tasks depend on the project at hand. They may be involved in data collection, or may be thoe ones to study the prepared raw data. For these data to be useful, these should be organized into tables, graphs ad charts using several statistical tools. These will then be interpreted accordingly and be reported to the agencies concerned. The result of their works may be used by the different government department jsut like the healtcare department. Take for example the Department of Health. The health officials may rely on their forecasts and projections of the demographers and use them in developing health and wellness programs.
Earnings and Job Outlook
The range of salary for a demographer starts off from 24,000 U.S. dollars to 61,000 U.S. dollars per annum. Others who have attained a considerable working experience can earn around 91,000 U.S. dollars in a year. The job outlook however, is predicted to grow more slowly than the average as the demand for the population vital statistics do not change that much, and that computer programs have been aiding the demographers in data organization and interpretation, implying that there a lesser need for manpower in accomplish these tasks.
