Cosmetic Sales Representatives: Job Description, Education, Skills and Duties, Earnings and Outlook

Job Overview Those staff that we see in the department stores or going from one client to another to offer cosmetic products are called cosmetic sales representatives. Cosmetic sales representatives are basically sales agents or sales staff. They demonstrate beauty care products to the customers and clients to promote their products and then close sales of the items. We often see them in the department stores in skin care and beauty sections yet they may also work from thier homes as independent contractors. Whether they work independently or as employees of the stores and cosmetics companies, the goal of their job is to make the people aware of their products by way of promotion and afterwards sell them to these potential customers.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

If you are planning to build a career in being a cosmetic sales representative, prepare as early as highschool by taking subjects such as Business, English, Psychology  and Communication. Business subjects will train you on how to manage a retail store or on how to ptofit as an independent contractor. Psychology classes will enable you to understand the personality of each of the clients and be able to apply the right approach in selling. English  and communication classes will make you relay messages to them more effectively and establish a client-sales person relationship. A college degree is not at all required to get in the job. However, most of the sales representatives have some college years giving them some background on sales, business and retailing.

Skills and Abilities

The skills that are needed to become a cosmetic sales reperesentative are skills in communication , interpersonal skills and helping or teaching skills. Commnunication skills is crucial in establishing rapport to the potential clients and in relaying substantial information about the products that they are promoting. Helping and teaching skills are manifested by the sales representatives' willingess to help them choose the products that are best for their profile and efforts in doing the demonstration on how to use the beauty products.

Duties

Cosmetic sales representatives may also be known as beauty advisers. They help customers choose certain products that are appropriate for their profiles.

They establish rapport to the clients and begin by assessing their preference and their physical charactersitsics (skin, hair and face characteristics) and conditions. After this, they will recommend several options that are applicable for them and let them try the products by way of demonstration. After the demonstration, they will encourage them to purchase the ones they like and the ones that may help them achieve their beauty goals.  Cosmetic sales representatives who work as employees of cosmetic companies are usually stationed in boths or small sections in department stores. Those who are self employed or are independent contractors of cosmetic companies such as Mary Kay and Avon go on house to house to sell for their own income/ or commissions.

Earnings and Job Outlook

The income for a cosmetic sales representative ranges from 13,000 U.S. dollars to 30,000 U.S. dollars. Others who are independent contractors of some cosmetic companies earn around 150,000 U.S. dollars or more depending on their excellence in closing sales. The job outlook is also good and is expected to move as fast as the average for the other professions.
