Job Overview College mathematics professors instruct both the undergraduate and the graduate students (master's and doctorate students) mathematical subjects or higher forms of mathematics at colleges and universities. They are the ones that we see doing tasks such as lecturing in class, leading small groups as well as creating and grading tests and different forms of learning evaluation. As college professors they are required to conduct or be involved in researches, write for publication as well as help in the administration in their department. 

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

If you wish to establish a career in the field of teaching in higher levels of education, prepare as early as high school by taking subjects in mathematics, physical sciences, communication and psychology. These are good preparatory subjects that will build a good foundation in learning the art of teaching and the science of mathematics. At least one advanced degree or a master's degree is required to be able to teach in a college. Preferred undergraduate course is a B.S. Mathematics and related higher forms of math with a major in any of the desired subspecialty.

Skills and Abilities

College mathematics professors should be experts in their field. They should also possess a genuine interest in the science of mathematics and in teaching college level to doctorate students. As such, patience is necessary. Teaching and helping skills are high valued in this career. Analytical and critical thinking skills should be present are expected of them.

Duties

College mathematics professors are the ones who instruct or provide rigorous trainings for the future mathematicians and students from other related disciplines such as in engineering, statistics and physics. They teach students in different levels at various levels of difficulty. Unlike the high school teachers, they spend less time in the classroom. This is because the college students can stand alone with moderate guidance and do not need to be spoon-fed. There are other responsibilities that they take including doing advising to the doctoral candidates, overseeing the different mathematical organization and acting as consultants, as well as reading mathematical books and journals for continuing studies. There are many others who are actively doing researches and have continuous and constant contribution to the development of the field. Their outputs can be found on mathematical publications or journals.
 
Outlook and Earnings

In general, college professors earn an average of 68,000 U.S. dollars yearly with the work on a full time basis. The salary ranges from 25,000 U.S. dollars to 99,000 U.S. dollars per annum. The job outlook is expected to move much faster than the average for the other profession as well.
