Job Overview There are special types of librarians who oversee the daily operations of the children's department of both the privately owned and public libraries. They are called the children's librarians. They are the ones who are responsible in maintaining the library a very cozy and a learning a place to the children. At present, libraries do not only feature books but also periodicals, DVS, videotapes, photographs, puzzles, educational game boards, music and other various learning resources for children.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you wish to establish a career in becoming a librarian for the children's library, the best preparation as early as high school is to take subjects in computer science, English, Speech and related subjects. It is important that the expertise with the use of the Dewey Decimal System is always there. For most positions in children's library, a masteral degree in library science is required. Post secondary courses that may be taken include the following: Library Management, Youth Service Librarianship, Literature and Resources Children.
Skills and Abilities
As a librarian specifically for the children's library, it is necessary to know how to deal with the formal nature of the library and the informal nature of the clients of the library. Skills in management and leadership is a must. In addition, a helping and teaching skills will enable them to cater the needs of the little children looking for different kinds of learning techniques and information. Interpersonal skills, and communication skills both in oral and in written form are crucial in fulfilling the duties related to the job.
Duties
It is the most basic duty of a children's librarians to assist their young readers or patrons is their informational needs. They help them find and select information that are best suited to what they are looking for whether for the purpose of research, personal knowledge, or simply for the enjoyment of reading and entertainment.They are primarily responsible in maintaining as well as organizing the library and the facilities in it.
They do book selection and ordering of the materials that are needed by their patrons: books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and other electronic and non electronic publications and learning materials. These are then organized for easy access wherein bar codes are attached for easy location and access. They must do a regular inventory of the materials and identification of those that are in need to be disposed of, repaired and replaced. At times, given the luxury of time, they may act as educators of the pupils and teach them as a personal tutor.
