Cardiologists: Job Description, Education, Skills and Duties, Earnings and Outlook

Job Overview Heart diseases or cardiovascular disease are increasing in incidence among patients who are reaching their middle adult stage. More and more cases of hypertension, heart attack, atherosclerosis are becoming the cause of prolonged hospitalization as well as increasing costs for the maintenence medication of the adult and elderly population. Physicians or doctors who specialize in internal medicine with the focus on the heart and the vascular ailments are called the cardiologists. Cardiologists take care of various types of clients ranging from the infants, children, adult and old age ones. They are the ones being called for referrals that involve diseases that cannot be managed by a general internists, since heart and vascular complications are on the rise. They assess, provide counseling, treatment to those patients with internal organ problems, more specifically those with heart or cardiac and cardiac related concerns.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

Basically, since cardiologists are medical doctors, they should have gone passing the premedical course and the medical course proper. Afterwards, a license to become an M.D. should be obtained by passing the medical boards examination. This will take around seven to eight years to studying and training. To qualify as an internist, an additional three years of residency in internal medicine should be taken. And to qualify as a cardiologist, an additional three years in the cardiology residency program should be finished. Cardiologists are required to be certified both as an internist, and as a cardiologist.

Certifications are being granted by the ABIM (The American Board of Internal Medicine) after passing the  required educational credentials and trainings in general medicine, Internal Medicine as well as in Cardiology.

Skills and Abilities

To be able to become a successful doctor, one has to be passionate with the profession he/she chose. He has to also show a genuine concern to people, making sure that all the possible interventions to be able to help them with their health and health related difficulties are exhausted. The expertise in the field is expected. Critical thinking skills are needed more espcially that they are the ones diagnosing the illness and providing the treatment plans for each of the patient's diagnosis. Interpersonal skills and communications skills are needed to become therapeutic with them, as well as to gain clients and be referred to the others as an excellent practitioner.

Duties

The basic duties of a doctor are also the basic duties of a cardiologist in general. Cardiologist try to obtain as much information from the client's health and disease history by way of a medical interview, records review as well as by ordering specific diagnostic examinations including laboratory testings, electrocardiography, ultrasound imaging and x-rays. After consolidating all the information, he is now prepared to diagnose what is going on with the body of the patient. He then discusses this to the patient as well as to the other involved medical practitioners and health professionals so as to plan with them. As doctors, they can order special regimen, as well as collaborate with the nurses, physical therapists, dietician as well as with the relatives of the patient. He administers or orders what medications should be taken, and evaluate the effects of each on the patient, by assessing his progress.He conducts follow up check up as well as health counseling to the realtives. At times, cardiologists teach resident subordinates and supervise them as students.

The job outlook of a cardiologist is growing about as fast as the average. The salary depends on the status of employment, clients coming to them outside the employment practice, as well as the rate that they give to individual patients as professional fees. Salaries range from 47,710 U.S. dollars for the resident or entry level cardiologists, and may go up as high as 335,000 U.S. dollars or more, for the ones with a proven caliber in the field of Cardiology.
