Beverage Industry Workers: Job Description, Education, Skills and Duties, Earnings and Outlook

Job Overview Soft drinks were being manufactured since the 1830s. Pharmacists and food technologists  tried to improve the properties of soft drinks by adding ingredients from plants. Early flavors were root beers, ginger ale, sarsaparilla, strawberry and lemon. This advancement  was helpful in persuading people not to drink alcoholic beverages. The growing demand for carbonated drinks revolutionalized the beverage industry. In 1892, crown cap was developed to prevent carbon dioxide from escaping in bottled beverages.  Beverage  industry workers are the ones involved in the production of these. Without them, soft drinks and other beverages will not reach the market and therefore will not reach our taste buds.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
Most jobs in the beverage industry would require an applicant to have a high school degree. Classes that aspiring applicants should concentrate on are as follows: Chemistry, Family and Consumer Science, Mathematics, Business and Shop. Training is usually provided by the company but they also need to have a basic education to cope up with sophisticated training program. An Associate’s degree and training as a Laboratory Technician are recommended to be competitive and for advancement purposes. Those who opt to work as quality control specialists, supervisors or managers should have a college degree in Chemistry, Biology, Business or Engineering.

Skills and Abilities

Scientific knowledge will give more opportunities for an applicant to be employed in a beverage company. They are likely to be promoted because of their background or knowledge. Technical skills are important especially for those in the department of quality control. Knowledge in management and skill are needed by those who are applying for a managerial position.

It is important for a beverage industry worker to know how to work with a team. A production area will consist of people who will be working together through division of labor. 

Duties
There are many duties and responsibilities that need to be performed by workers of beverage industry. They are responsible in mixing syrups and bottling the soft drinks. They also seal, ship, distribute and sell the products to the consumers.Some workers are assigned to control pressures, line speeds, pressures, in-line blending and carbonation. Some are assigned in growing and harvesting the main products like citrus, tea, coffee and other fruits. Some products are imported from other countries so there are workers assigned in processing, shipping, importing, packaging and distributing. There are other workers who creates syrups, sweeteners, can labels, bottles and other items that are needed to support and sell the beverage. Some beverage companies have a department who handles recycling of bottles and cans.
 

Earnings and Job Outlook
Factors which affect the income of beverage industry worker is their work experience, union affiliation, size of their employer, location and other factors. Those in managerial, engineering, research and development position are paid higher than those who are in the production area. Job opportunities in the beverage industry is high since there is a continuous demand for beverage. There are also new companies that manufacture new drink products that will require the services of the beverage industry workers.
