Job Overview Regulatory system for air travel started in 1926. This started the profession of aviation safety inspector. To keep up with the fast paced changes in the aviation industry, the Federal Aviation Agency was established in 1958. They are responsible in promoting the development and safety or air travel through regulations. They set standards that are being enforced. The agency was renamed Federal Aviation Administration when it became a part of Department of Transportation. The National Transportation Safety Board was created to determine the probable cause of air accidents and to investigate aviation accidents. They give safety recommendations to improve the field of aviation.
Education,Knowledge and Trainings Required
Science and Mathematics classes will prepare an individual who wants to be an aviation safety inspector in the future. Communication class is beneficial. Minimum education requirement to qualify in this field is a high school diploma. Those who obtained college degree can apply for nongovernment position. It is important to have experience in the field although college education can be a substitute. Earning a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics, Air Transportation and Engineering make the applicant more competitive. Federal aviation standards are followed by aviation safety inspector and they should have quality control experience with production of aircraft engines, aircraft, aircraft assemblies and aircraft propellers. Certification is required if operating an aircraft is included in their responsibility.
Skills and Abilities
It is important that an aviation safety inspector is responsible. They need to be patient and persistent especially when they are investigating or inspecting. They need to have good communication skills to come up with right analysis of a situation. They need to effective write reports.
Duties
Aviation safety inspector needs to inspect, create, repair and maintain aviation operation procedures.
It is their responsibility to make sure that the aircraft is safe to fly. They check the equipment and facilities that surround the aircraft are safe. It is their responsibility to make sure that people who are working on the aircraft or flying it had done their task correctly. Aviation safety inspectors enforce the regulations set by Federal Aviation Administration. It is part of their duty to evaluate flight instructors, pilots and navigators. They inspect the facilities and equipment used by these workers to ensure that safety standards and regulations are met.
Earnings and Job Outlook
Aviation safety inspectors in 2005 had an average annual earnings of approximately $49,490. Their income can range from $22,610 up to $91,710 in a year. They are also compensated with benefits from their employers such as life insurance, paid leaves, medical and dental insurance. There are many security threats being posed by terrorist and hi-jacking groups nowadays. This creates more job opportunities for the position of aviation safety inspector so as to make sure that the air travel is safe and free from threats althroughout.
