Job Overview Sports are activities that are important in universities and colleges. The schools form teams that compete with other schools. Students are encouraged to join basketball, football, soccer, baseball and other sports offered in schools. Organizing or joining athletic programs would require to have many people get involved in sports and a budget to be set. Directors of athletics, athletic administrators, athletic directors of intercollegiate athletics or athletic directors oversee and coordinate sport programs in schools.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
Those who are planning to be an athletic director would need to take up courses in Business, Accounting English, Speech, Social Studies and Mathematics to make them a well-rounded individual and prepare them for college. An applicant should have a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or Sports Administration to be qualified in the profession. Ohio University in Athens, Ohio is considered to have the oldest and the best program in sports administration. Most of their courses focus on Management Marketing, Business Administration, Sports Administration, Communications, Journalism, Management and Facility Management.
Skills and Abilities
People who love sports can consider having a career as an athletic director.They should know how to delegate responsibilities to other people. Being organized is important since they handle different activities or tasks. They should also be aiming academic excellence by implementing sports activity that will improve the academic prospective of students. It is important for athletic directors to stay focused in creating a financially sound sports activity. Integrity is needed together with good leadership and management skills.
They should have a strong ability to manage finances. They should know how to control their emotions. It is important to also know coaching abilities. Excellent people skills is needed since their work would involve meeting different people.
Duties
The primary duty of an athletic director is to think of different athletic programs that will be implemented in colleges and universities. They should make sure that sports program created will meet academic standards. After the activity is planned, they implement the activity with a corresponding budget. It is their responsibility to think of ways on how to get more funds. Their duty also include hiring, evaluating and supervising coaches. They meet with sports officials or athletic directors from other schools to coordinate the sports schedulewith them. They also inform the public about the sports activities through radio, newspapers and television.
Earnings and Job Outlook
The income of athletic director depends on the college and university they are working for. In 2005, the average income of athletic directors was approximately around $75,400 per annum. The job opportunities for this profession is fairly steady. Competition is tough and an applicant should make sure that they implement athletic programs and activities that are effective to be recognized.
