Job Overview Several record companies have a specific department called the artist and repertoire department, or A&R department for short. These are composed of people such as A&R coordinators, the executives,and other types of staff that discover and locate new talents, and facilitate project contract signing with the other companies.The workers have various tasks depending on thier position in the department, but the main goal of every artsits and repertoire worker is to be able to gain  business by way of producing artists' CD manifesting their talents to the public, promoting them, coordinating and arranging for shows, concert and tours, as well as taking care of the many details of the talent and contract management.  Their tasks do not end with getting businesses after every project cortract. Their work becomes more closely tied with the development of the careers of the talents as these artists stay more time in the industry.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

The most important step to become more prepared to be part of the artists and repertoire department is to get involved in bands, talent shows, and some music or musical associations. Classes in business, mathematics, English as well as speech and drama are helpful in preparing one for a post secondary training soon. As for the executives of the A and R department, they come from different educational backgrounds. A college degree will serve as a good credential in this job. More imporantly a professional working experience is needed with a record company when considering the degree of trainings experienced or attended. Other workers in this field posses degrees in business, communicatoins, music, liberal arts, film and video, as well as in journalism and marketing.
 

Skills and Abilities

The most important qualities of a worker in the department of artists and repertoire are professionalism, intergity as well as having a self initiating attitude. The skills that are required to be successful in this field are interpersonal skills, communication skills, as well as leadership and management skills, more specifically to those who are into handling closing of contracts and supervising other subordinate workers within the department. The love for showbiz, music and the entertainment industry is a must, as this will inspire them to work harder and pursue the talents that they handle.

Duties

There are various duties and tasks an artist and repertoire worker may be responsible for in this department, as there are various tasks to be accomplished in this industry.

The A and R executives are responsible for the overall management of the movements within the area of scope, as well as in promoting leadership among the junior workers. The coordinators report to the executive and  are responsbile for carrying out duties coming from the executives to the lower level position workers. They plan with, coordinate as well as study projects to be launched per artist, and ensure that everything is in its proper place. Other workers are responsble for the career development of the talents and marketing their skills to the different clients and companies.

Job Outlook and Earnings

There are a lot of record companies all over the world by which these workers can be employed yet getting a job is not easy. This is due to the tight competitions of the many who are seeking for this kind of work. The salary ranges from 20,000 U.S. dollars per annum for those who are in their entry level of employment. Those who are working in the industry and have developed significant and continuous network of clients may earn or can be paid aorund 85,000 U.S. dollars in minimum  annually. Experienced coordinators and executives may earn more than 200, 000 U.S. dollars yearly.
