Job Outlook Antique and Art dealers are business people who focused their interests on selling old valuable or antiquated items, and art or artistic products. The shops that we see along malls or streets with these kinds of items of display are usually owned by art and antique dealers.They aquire, collect, trade, display, buy and sell these items for the purpose of profiting over each item on sale. Strictly defined, items that are considered antique are those that are more an a hundred years old, although these days, those items that are dated back 1970, to include jewelries, furniture, clothing, household goods like spoons and plates, and displays, vehicles are already considered antiques. As for the art items, these may include different types of paintings, sculptures, toys and decorative furniture.

Education Knowledge and Trainings Required

There is no specific educational requirement needed to become an antique and an art dealer. Subjects in high school that may greatly help are as follows: Art, Art History, Business, as well as Family and Consumer Science. In college, however, degrees in Fine Arts, History, and Business Administration are some of the suggested courses an aspiring dealer may take.

Skills and Abilities

The most important skills in this business are interpersonal skills, marketing skills and communication skills. Looking fot clients to avail of the items that are on sale is not easy. It needs a steady flow of clients or even fellow antique and art dealers for him/her to sustain his/her business. A good eye for antiquated products and the skill in researching forhistories of, and restoration of the items may be of great help in marketing them as they may appear historical knowing the origins, durable and pleasant looking after restoration. For those who own huge shops with staff to manage, they should possess a kind of a management anleadership skill to run the entire enterprise effectively.

Duties

Basically, an antique and art dealer is a serious art and antique items collector and sole proprietor in one.

He/she starts by sifting possible items with value from one store to another, or from professionals or even from any of the prospective community people who may have these possessions desired. After being able to buy or procure the collectibles, he/she cleans and restores them. Restoration will increase the value of the antiques and make the art items vintage looking and pleasant. After this, he/she will put them in display and market them either in shops, or even online, or to specific people such as interrior designers, fellow art collectors,as well as via online. This will increase the rate of sales for the dealer and therefore will be able to sustain having the shops, or the very least, his/her living.

Job Outlook and Earnings

The earnings of any businessperson is never fixed. It is dependent on the size of the enterprise, as well as the performance of it. Those that are internationally known and high-end antique stores and galleries may earn millions of dollars in profit. And some of the small and beginning ones may earn less than 500,000 gross profit in a year. As for the outlook, a fairly moderate growth in the art or collectible industry is expected in the future years.
