Job Overview As aviation industry continues to grow, aircraft designing, building, operating and repairing became more specialized. Planes have been improving and this is because of the new technologies incorporated on the aircraft materials and designs. The designs and control systems are now more complex. Safety is important especially when the aircraft is starting transporting passengers from one country to the other. Aircraft mechanics play an important role in the aviation industry. They make sure and check the aircraft for the safety and comfort of everyone aboard.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
High school diploma is needed to continue advance studies to become an aircraft mechanic. Courses that help enhance their skills include Mechanical drawing, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Auto Mechanics, Electrical shop and Machine Shop. Trade schools are offered by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or one can learn about the job in Armed Forces. Tools and equipment that will be used in the profession will be taught in the many trade schools. The applicant can experience this profession when in the armed forces. Certification from FAA is required before practicing a career as aircraft mechanic. The certification can be for airframe mechanic and power plant mechanic. Those who want to combine airframe and power plant mechanic would need inspectors certificate Those aircraft mechanics which are not yet licensed and are just getting experience should be supervised by certified mechanics.
Skills and Abilities
It is important to meet rigid standards before working as an aircraft mechanic. They should be physically fit and should have the stamina or strength to lift heavy parts and tools. They should also have the agility for climbing and reaching. It is essential that they are not afraid of heights. They should be detail –oriented and work with precision. They should continue studying for latest technologies and techniques in the aviation industry especially when it comes to aircraft specific concerns.
Duties
The main responsibility of an aircraft mechanic is to repair parts of the aircrafts that are malfunctioning.
It is their duty to inspect the plane and look for cuts or dents in the tires and the surface, oil leaks, malfunction of radar, light equipment and radio. They change oils, replenish hydraulic and oxygen system and clean spark plugs. They perform scheduled maintenance and replace parts that are not working properly.
Earnings and Job Outlook
Average income for an aircraft mechanic in 2004 was about $45,281 which is a little more than minimum wage set by the government. Those who are certified earns more since the certification acts as al validation of their training and knowledge in the field. Job opportunities will be steady for the coming years although there is a possibility of an increase. Those who are updated with technological advancements in composite materials, electronics and other areas will be more competitive and highly demanded.
