Job Overview: The main role of an advertising and promotions manager involves planning and directing advertising programs and policies, producing collateral materials like contests, coupons, posters or give-aways. In general, the advertising and promotions manager must find the most effective ways to create interest in the purchase of a service or product for his/her department, account or company. These managers work closely with marketing directors to identify target market, set budgets, outline goals and create plans for an ad campaign.

Education, Training and Knowledge Requirements: Advertising and promotions managers are highly-skilled workers with several years of experience. Many of them start working for advertising agencies or for specific accounts and then work their way up in advertising departments. A Bachelor’s degree in the field of advertising is preferred, but courses in journalism, marketing, business administration, communications or liberal arts are also useful. Most companies require their advertising and promotions managers to have a master’s degree or complete certification programs.

Skills & Abilities: Advertising and promotions managers should possess sales and marketing skills, excellent communication skills, superb customer service skills, advanced knowledge in media production, management and business principles, design techniques, theory, techniques and principles of fine arts, and administrative or clerical procedures. He/she must be able to communicate effectively through excellent writing, active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking and persuasion. Advertising and promotions managers should also be able to apply management of financial resources and multi-tasking through proper time management.

Duties:

The nature of work involved in being an advertising and promotions manager include getting information from various sources, making decisions and solving problems, establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships inside and outside the organization, preparing budgets for program costs, doing research and developing an ad campaign, planning and preparing advertising materials, overseeing design layouts and advertising copy, assisting with annual budget development, preparing and negotiating advertising or sales contracts, monitoring and analyzing sales promotion campaigns, formulating plans to extend business with established accounts, making ways to reach campaign goals, and other tasks assigned.

Earnings & Job Outlook: The employment outlook for advertising and promotions managers is very good, since they can hold jobs in various industries, both in the public and private sectors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook of advertising and promotions managers was expected to grow between 2004 and 2014. However, like many managerial positions, salaries vary according to the geographic location, size of company and experience. In 2004, advertising and promotions managers earned salaries of up to $107,030 per year with a median annual salary of $63,610.
