Job Overview: An adjustment clerk is a type of customer service personnel responsible for performing tasks similar to call center representatives, telephone operators, accounting clerks and customer service representatives. He/she is also responsible for investigating and resolving customer’s inquiries concerning merchandise, billing, credit rating or other services; notifying customers of adjustments, recommendations, or findings found to customers’ bills.

Education, Training and Knowledge Requirements: Since adjustment clerk positions are entry-level jobs, only a high school diploma and strong computer skills are usually required. Those who are bilingual are preferred. Training is often given to newly graduates or clerks without experience to obtain knowledge in computer software programs, communication procedures, telephone systems or other programs.

Skills & Abilities: To become successful in this field, one should be active listeners and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. In addition, he/she should have strong reporting skills, advanced computer skills, superb interpersonal skills, effective problem-solving skills and proven customer service skills. Clerks should also possess sound judgment, critical thinking, and basic teaching skills needed in providing instructions to clients.

Duties:

Tasks of an adjustment clerk include assisting customers directly by e-mail, phone or instant messengers to resolve inquiries; looking into complaints of clients and evaluating merits of their statements within company procedures or policies; arranging replacement of products, providing rebates or performing other actions if customer complaints are valid; reviewing claims adjustments and handling adjustment follow-ups to ensure customer satisfaction; examining merchandise to determine complaint accuracy; preparing reports about types, volume and disposition of claims resolved and unresolved; and consulting with supervisors about possible actions regarding complex customer concerns.

 

Clerks may also be responsible for investigating overdue or damaged shipments and tracing missing merchandise as well as recommending improvements to services or products based on customer feedback received. In some companies, clerks may be designated according to the type of complaint, such as merchandise, billing, and investigation teams, among others.

Earnings & Job Outlook: Adjustment clerks can find jobs in various industries that provide customer support to its clientele, such as insurance, hospital, airline, telecommunication, retail, utility companies and wholesale, among others. Employment growth is expected to increase up to 20% through 2016. Salary of customer service representatives in general has an annual average salary of $30,000.
