Benefits of Workplace Wellness Program

One of the old adages that seem to be more and more applicable today is, ‘Prevention is better than a cure.’ The idea is first attributed to the Roman poet Persius in A.D. c 58! This leads us to another adage, ‘There’s nothing new under the sun’ (King Solomon – if case you’re interested). Funny how these old sayings have an almost immortal truth to them.

In this so– called modern age, we know through science and medicine that taking positive action regarding your health really works. Have the number of smokers declined in the Western world because nicotine is no longer as addictive as it was – or is it because we know for certain that your chances suffering from of heart disease, lung cancers etc. far increase if you smoke?

It used to be that your personal health was your own business. And it still is. However, these days we are getting more and more encouragement to look after ourselves. Nobody orders us to improve our physical condition, but we are bombarded by the ‘Get Healthier’ message everywhere. Today, you might even get that message at work.

Now many employers are instigating a ‘Workplace Wellness Program.’ Data and research has shown that there are genuine benefits to be gained by a program of this sort, for both the employee and the employer who participate. It introduces a system that is designed to make workers aware of things that they do which can have a detrimental effect on their health, and offers an alternative to the unhealthy way.

This can help prevent a worsening of any existing problems and even help to avoid any future issues. Dependent upon the size of the company and the budget that they can afford, the program can go from a simple ‘Lifestyle’ newsletter up to a full gymnasium with professional trainers.

Example: Imagine a single individual, who constantly struggles with their weight and has done so for many years. Coming to work might actually make it very difficult for them to resist the calorie temptations that are on offer. A leaving ‘do’ – cakes all round! A promotion – a celebratory lunch! Usually there is more than a single individual in one company who has a weight problem, so if they were all in the ‘Wellness Program’ together, they would be there for each other providing support, encouragement and even an element of competitiveness in keeping to the slimming regime! Camaraderie in the workplace is a positive for both the employee – making it a more enjoyable place to be, and for the employer with a more productive workforce. Getting fit feels great, and at the same time reduces your susceptibility to illness, and (without exaggeration) can increase your life expectancy.

Research has proved that when a ‘Wellness Program’ is properly used, the return of each dollar invested, reaps a good reward due to a greatly reduced sickness attendance record, less sick pay and a much greater output.

I feel that we loose and implementing a wellness program by workplaces will make a difference with peoples daily life.
