How To Get Certified As a Medical Office Manager

Submitted by: TigerEye

If you are in the West and are interested in working as a medical office manager you will more than likely have a very secure job. The United States in particular is experiencing a decline in those who know how to take care of their own health. They will be providing regular customers to medical doctors simply through their terrible eating habits and lack of exercise.

Back a few years ago, nearly half of Medical Office Managers worked in general medicine and surgical facilities. Many of the remainder of these managers work in nursing homes. They also work in health maintenance organizations (HMO´s) and group medical practices. They are somewhat of a hub of information for the whole process of keeping patients on the right road to recovery.

One of the first things to learn to get certified in this position is
to get an undergraduate degree in the area of medicine. If you plan on working in a larger practice you will need a Master´s degree. Whichever you choose the lower limit on education will be a an Associate degree in healthcare administration.

The next step could be to get the medical office management Certificate of Proficiency. This is a twelve month program that requires the experience of being a receptionist and more than likely a medical office administrative assistant. You will be expected to display a good "bedside manner" and a powerful ability to communicate with workers and other personnel that come in contact with your office.

Some areas of expertise you will need are:

  •     Software technology
  •     English and mathematics for business
  •     Medical nomenclature
  •     Medical insurance
  •     Office personnel professional advancement
  •     Microcomputer programs and applications
  •     Basics of medical coding
  •     Word processing
  •     Medical office techniques and protocol
  •     Accounting

You must finish an approved program from your home state if you live in the United States. Some of these states will need you to have a special license if you want to work in an assisted living facility. If you are aware of the problems of assisted living facilities you will find this job to be particularly challenging. This could be your chance to push for higher standards for this area of what some call "healthcare". Some are opening up a regular home and calling it an "assisted care facility". You as a Medical Office Manager can have a potent word in your community against this.

Basically, if you are a high level problem solver you can believe that you will become a good Medical Office Manager. Being a "people person" goes a long way in a job like this. If you know how to deal fairly and honestly with those who come into contact with you, you will be an asset to most any organization, including medicine. Make it your goal to strive for first class service, just as you would want given to yourself. This will not only qualify you for a Medical Office Manager, but for many other jobs as well.
