If you have not yet learned how to program mobile devices you are about to get behind the times. Mobile devices are expected to experience a global rebound in 2010 and it is wise to be prepared. Here we will talk about how to do just that by becoming a Sun certified mobile applications developer or SCMAD.
The developers of the Java language have their progamming language in devices as far away as Mars. But you will be programming devices a bit closer. 1.2 billion mobile devices were shipped this year. You can start by becoming a SCMAD. The first step is to download the JRE from Sun Microsystems. You will want to practice with the free download of the JRE. You can find practice projects all over the internet. One is included below.
If you want to go the cheap route, it is recommended that you get a downloadable book by Bruce Eckel called, "Thinking In Java". It has hundreds if not more recommendations online by those who are programmers already. The book is a free download, or you can get the book signed if you pay and order it that way.
Another unique way to learn J2ME is by making robots. This is certainly more interesting than just learning by reading a book. If you are the type that learns by doing you need to get online to find out how to start this fun way of learning java. A brief overview of this method follows. You learn how to create tanks, similar to those that are used in the army. These tanks are simple coded robots that are created with the Java programming language. You have some very helpful individuals that provide some free code at their site mentioned below.
Once you have become proficient enough with a few of your own java projects you can think about getting your SCMAD certification from Sun. There are two steps to getting to the level of testing for the SCMAD. You must first be certified as a Sun Certified Java Associate or SCJA. The next level is the Sun Certified Java Programmer.
Then you are able to test for the SCMAD. A very good book to prepare for your exam is from scmadbook.com. Currently it is only available from India, but is printed McGraw Hill Publications.
The details of the exam are as follows. You will be presented with sixty eight questions. You will have to get fifty five percent of them correct to pass. The test time is limited to ninety minutes. To register for the test you will have to pay three hundred dollars. You will have questions about JTWI, CLDC,security in both of these modes, networking and application models. You will be tested on delivery, lifecycle and provisioning in the application model section. There are eleven total sections and not all are mentioned here. Before you are allowed to take the test you must be certified as a SCJP (see above).
You will be proud to enter the world of mobile technology and have a very desirable career field that will last for many years to come.
