The first thing to do is start at the bottom. There are three main levels of Cisco jobs; the Associate, the Professional and the Expert level. You actually start with learning one level below the three main levels as a CCENT or Cisco Certified Entry level Network Technician. To start at this level you should take the 640-822 ICND1 exam. To prepare for this it is recommended that you take a training course. This course is named; "Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1". You will become proficient enough to network a small branch office system when you complete this first step. There are no prerequisites for this first level and there are two parts to it. It is a good idea to get these done first before attempting the CCNA exam.
The CCNA, or 640-802 exam, is the exam we will be exploring here. The exam itself will cost about $250 dollars and the fee is nonrefundable. This exam will see how well you can troubleshoot and manage a small to medium sized network. The subjects include; network security and types, routing, switching fundamentals, operating IOS devices, expanding switched networks by using VLANs, mapping IP routes, controlling IP traffic with access lists, establishing P2P connections and frame relay connections. You will also be tested on TCP/IP. TCP/IP is the web´s basic language and is used to route information and make sure that information arrives where it should.
The CCNA exam itself has forty to forty five questions and is ninety minutes long. A company called Pearson VUE takes care of registering your payment for taking the test.
The Cisco site itself has the tools you will need to learn to study and to learn about networking. You can practice online and there is even a game someone designed to help with exam preparation.
